Guided Sea Fishing - Cod
Whilst I am quite new to cod fishing, I have found a few marks off Southwold in Suffolk, where I have had some very good winter days, catching fish to over double figures, in bags of up to 20 fish a day. To date I have only worm fished at anchor for them in this very coloured water, although in the summer months they are apparently quite abundant off most of the wrecks off the Norfolk & Suffolk coast, so if you fancy a bit of pioneering then come along !
The BoatWe use a trailered Warrior 165, with a 75hp Mariner main engine & Johnson 4hp back up engine. The boat has a twin electrical systems, 1 VHF & 1 DSC radio, sat nav chart plotter & fish finder / depth sounder. We also carry full safety gear including a compass, lifejackets, flares, spare anchors & warp. This is towed to the relevant harbour & launched / recovered with our 4wd truck, fitted with an electric winch. Take a look at the Cod Fishing Gallery to see our boat and the instruments we use.
We are not trying to run a full charter operation, taking 10 or 12 anglers, we are operating a small boat for a maximum of 2 anglers. This way we can tailor the fishing to suit your preferences and give a full personal service with tuition if required.TackleWe supply all tackle, (although you are more than welcome to bring your own if you prefer) all bait, hot drinks and soups, food, (if required) fuel for boat and transport to and from harbour. The rods we use for cod are Shimano 8ft 6inch speedmaster 20/30’s and the reels are TLD 15 lever drags loaded with 30lb braid. Cod end tackle consists of 50lb mono leaders onto which 2 or 3 12 inch long wire spreader booms are tied, with 4 to 12 inch snoods, to various sized medium to heavy gauge wire hooks. Leads used are from 4 to 12oz dependent upon tide conditions. Baits:During the winter baits will be lugworms, squid & possibly sprats, fished either on their own or in various cocktails. We can also experiment with various shellfish, ie mussels, cockles etc. Additional information about this fishing trip
Itinerary - Winter Cod Fishing - Leave SAS Tackle - Kings Lynn at 5.30 am
- Arrive Southwold 7.30 to 8am.
You then have the option of a café breakfast or launch straight away. We then head out to the marks, where we tackle up, bait up with lugworm and / or squid baits (all supplied) & fish for cod for the next 8 hours. You have the option of keeping all your catch or practising catch & release. I myself encourage catch & release once I have a couple for the pot , however that is your choice. I will advise you though that it is illegal to take undersized fish & take fish to sell without a proper license. I will clean out any fish you want to keep at sea and keep them in an ice filled coolbox until we get home to ensure that they are kept in the best condition for you. I will land your fish, bait your hooks and cast for you should you wish, or provide help and advise only to the level you want. You are the client and I am there to give you the best days fishing I can so nothing is too much trouble and if you are inexperienced don’t worry at all. If your enjoyment is purely about winding in the fish and having your picture taken with it, that is no problem or if you simply want a taxi ride to the mark and want to do everything else yourself that is also no problem. The boat slip at Southwold only dries out in exceptional circumstances so we can leave and return to suit more “normal” fishing hours and can also get in quickly should the weather turn bad.
Tackle, Clothing and Personal Requirements
Things you should bring: - A pair of warm, waterproof boots.
- Warm clothing, (several thin layers are better than just shirt & a thick jumper !)
- A waterproof oversuit and for this I would suggest a 1 or 2 piece flotation suit. Not only are they extremely warm and weatherproof, they can also save your life !
If you don’t have one or can’t run to this expense for 1 trip, I can arrange to hire a suit to you for the day. Please request price and advise size when booking trip.
Accommodation - Guided Cod Fishing 2008-09
Whilst the trip is a day fishing trip, and would not normally require accommodation, should this be something that might ease long distance travelling, we can arrange overnight accommodation for you. This might be local to our tackle shop in Kings Lynn or local to the harbour from which the boat will be launched. If either suits your needs give us a call and we will make arrangements for you. Optionally you can of course do this for yourself. Bed and Breakfast Accommodation in Southwold View Larger Map and More Details
