Fenland river report 1-10-09 |
|
Middle Level Middle Level has some colour and is heaving with bait fish, which has made the zandering quite hard, but as the weather has started to cool it should get a bit easier. (relatively speaking of course !)
Relief Channel
The Relief Channel is still gin clear and at the moment is full of voracious jack pike, again making the zandering hard, although they must feed even in this clear water. Hopefully they will put some water through soon to give it a bit of colour but don't hold your breath! Steve |

Top Blue Marlin result for Dave Irwin |
|
Shop regular Dave Irwin is just back from a holiday in trhe Azores, where he booked 2 days fishing aboard the 31ft Bertram sport boat "Habitat" out of Horta, trolling for big blue marlin, and what a couple of days he had !
First fish came at 11am and was a white marlin of approx 200lb. This was a good start but more was to follow. At 1pm the rod sreamed off and after a crazy 1 and 1/2 hours a big blue was leadered at: a massive 850lbs, but still more was to follow and at 4pm the final fish of the day was boated at 650lbs !! An incredible day by anyones standards. This should have sealed the holiday but the following morning Dave added another blue at 450lbs ! Needless to say a party then ensued, leaving Dave with not only some superb and unforgettable memories, but also a very sore head !
Well done Dave, you have just experienced probaby the best 2 days fishing of your life mate ! Steve

Tope report - they are back and feeding! |
|
I had top pike angler Jason Davies and his mate Tinker as clients on Tuesday. The day started off very rough on the way out over the Brancaster bar, to the point of the front of the boat going under on several occasions, but once we were out a mile or so it calmed down slightly, and after a couple of hours it just got flatter and hotter throughout the day with loads of sunshine. The mackerel proved elusive yet again, with just enough caught for bait to get started toping.
The first run came after only 5 minutes, to Tinker and this resulted in a nice 34lb fish. I doubled up the lead on a mackerel rod and left this over the side working away on it's own and this brought the odd fish to just keep up with the bait attrition caused crabs. The second run was a screamer and came when Jason was flat out in the cuddy not feeling to well and after grabbing the rod and winding into the fish it promptly fell off and as circle hooks don't usually let go it was probably a very small fish that couldn't get the bait into it's mouth (I hope !)
We then had a couple of hours of soaking up the sun before the third run, that Jason nailed and I soon boated his first tope, a 38lb female, which he was very pleased with. In the early afternoon we finally ran out of bait and as it was slack tide we ran over about 4 miles to a sharp drop off and nail the mackerel getting about 50 in half a dozen drifts over.
By the time we got back to the tope mark the tide was running hard but no further runs were forthcoming so as soon as there was enough water we ran back to the harbour and I left 2 happy anglers to drive home thinking about new boats, tackle etc etc !!

Tope report and New Charter boat |
|
I had 2 clients / friends from Denmark for a days tope fishing of the Norfolk coast and it was very hard, the mackerel were patchy and even the flatties were missing or not feeding.
But in the inevitable SAS way, we did manage to bag a nice 37lb male tope to Torsten Snogdal-Boutrup , along with a nice bass to me on feathers.
So a result despite tough conditions! New Charter Boat partner: We are pleased to announce that we are now taking bookings for larger parties wishing to fish for both tope in summer and cod in winter, to fish on board Mako, a very nice offshore 105 working out of Wisbech in summer and Lowestoft in winter.
I had a day out with Chris (skipper / owner) & Nathan the deckhand, on Saturday. Although were out fishing ,it was more of an exploratory trip so we moved around a lot really to see how the operation worked. We didn't have any tope (probably due to moving so much), but we had a good day out fishing new (for me) marks both in and around the Wash and I can now thoroughly recommend a charter on Mako.
The tea and bacon sandwiches are plentiful and it a slick operation all round.
Keep an eye on the site for pics in the next week or so. Steve |
