SAS in TexasTarget Species The main target species here is the mighty Alligator Gar. These fish can grow to incredible sizes! You can see examples of some of the fish we have taken on previous trips in the Gallery 1 - Gallery 2.
When I first heard about and saw pictures of alligator gar, during a slide show and talk by Ralph Hughes, ...all hell breaks loose as they either throw themselves clear of the water attempting to throw the hooks... who told excellent stories about his pioneering trip and their fighting ability and acrobatics, I was enthralled by their sheer size and incredibly prehistoric looks. However I had almost forgotten about them until many years later, when having fished with Johnny Jensen and other Danish friends in many places around the world, we got an invite to actually fish for them so I jumped at the chance, paid my deposit and booked my flights in record time, and my own experience of these mighty fish was amazing. They fight incredibly hard and regularly throw themselves clear of the water. 150lb braid is a must in the snag filled river and it is, with big fish a case of hit and hold to try to firstly get them up off the bottom (half the battle) and if you manage that you then have to stop them going back down there again, (quarter the battle) and finally, after a fight of 20 minutes or so, when they are beside the boat at last, you have to rope them and drag them into the boat, which is the final and possibly hardest quarter of the battle. Trip Facts Fly into Houston, Texas, and hire a car / minivan and make our way to Huntsville (approx 2 hour drive) where we book into a motel and rest up for the remainder of the day / night. In the morning we drive to meet the guides at whatever location we intend to fish, load up the boats and are off up river or across lake.
At the first spot the guide baits up and gets the rods in to await a take. As soon as a float moves you follow it in the boat for anything up to 20 minutes (as they have long noses full of teeth they take this long to get the bait into the mouth proper ready to swallow) before striking. This is when all hell breaks loose as they either throw themselves clear of the water attempting to throw the hooks, or they scream off to the river bed, where they can hug the bottom and be near impossible to move without extreme, constant, rod breaking pressure.
As we fish varied areas along the Trinity river basin, sometimes 100 miles apart, we stay at various motels for odd nights so it pays to travel light and as it is hot weather fishing you don’t need a lot of luggage and tackle is supplied.
The river and river banks are very muddy so please don’t wear bright coloured expensive fishing clothing because you will end the day looking like you’ve been playing rugby in the rain after even 1 bankside photo session !!
