Zambia: Chiawa LodgeTarget SpeciesHere we fish the Zambian bank of the mighty Zambezi river for Tigerfish to 15lb plus and Vundu catfish to 40lbs plus. You can see examples of the wildlife and some of the fish we have taken on previous trips in the Gallery. On my first trip into Zambia we flew into Lusaka on a night flight from Heathrow, and hot, tired and irritable had to spend the next 2 hours wandering around the airport looking for our charter flight (African organisation is something you have to experience, to even start to comprehend !) Finally, at last we found the charter office, the plane, and even the pilot, so things were looking up, and we were soon in the air for our short fight 90 minute flight to Chiawa Lodge, set on the Zambian bank of the mighty Zambezi river. The flight was very smooth, with superb views of the open countryside, seeing herds of elephants & antelope ranging freely across the Savannah. With plenty to see and experience the flight went very quickly and before we realised, we had flown over the escarpment into the Zambezi valley, with incredible views along the river and were coming in to land on a dirt strip a short drive from the river and the superb lodge. While at Chiawa we caught Tigerfish to 15lb +, Vundu catfish to 40lbs +, we saw numerous game species, many elephants, and were even charged by a young bull, and I saw the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen, anywhere in the world. We were lucky enough to get a days pass to fish actually in the world renowned Chiawa game reserve, which was awesome and where we caught most of our double figure tigers. As with the Botswana trip, this is not a budget trip, but well worth the money, as this really is the trip of a lifetime. Just the scenery and game viewing is stunning and will leave your senses in overload. While you can and do see plenty of game during the days fishing, the lodge also offers night game drives, during which you have the chance of seeing the big predators feeding including lions and leopards. In fact we even had a leopard walk through the camp one evening we were there ! Trip FactsThis trip flies into Lusaka, where you can opt to take a short charter flight of approx 90 minutes, or take a minibus transfer of approx 5 hours to the lodge, where you are met by the lodge manager, shown to your well appointed Meru style tents (thatched roofs, en suite bathrooms) and have the rest of the day to unwind before fishing starts the next day. The facilities, service, food and drink here are all first class and there is even a small swimming pool to cool off in !.
