A brace of queen fish taken on an SAS trip to MozambiqueAfrica. For all it’s troubles and tragic history, mesmerises me. Just a mention of the place sets my heart racing, as this continent is without doubt my most treasured place on earth. On arriving in Africa, as soon as I step off the plane and smell the red earth I feel at home, with Mozambique and it’s islands chain of the Bazaruto archipelago being a major part of my love of it. I first went there to fish in 2002, with my good friend Stewart Downing. (now a bigwig at Pure fishing) We had 14 days there boat fishing in the Indian Ocean for giant trevally, queen fish and yellowfin tuna, and had a fantastic trip using light spinning tackle for all these species, catching them to around 40lbs using surface popping lures in 50 feet of water over small reefs, and burning vast amounts of fuel chasing tuna shoals around the Ocean ! (pre-global warming & only a dollar a gallon!)

My 2 best memories of this trip were of my playing a 30lb + tuna when suddenly a huge brindle bass weighing what must have been in excess of 400lbs started chasing it and finally caught it, sucking it in like a polo mint and shot straight the bottom with it’s snack ! Needless to say, on 12lb line I didn’t have much chance of doing anything but watch it disappear ! The second was of myself and Stewart both playing tuna close to the boat when all hell broke loose and Stewart's fish was bitten in half by a shark just seconds before he could haul it into the boat !
There are several islands in the chain and most have boat and fishing facilities, although they do differ greatly in price and species fished for. The one we fished was Inhaca and I have to say that when we were there the whole operation was superb, if a little quiet at nights, but after a full days boat fishing all I wanted was food and sleep anyway!

On most of the Islands you can beach fish for giant trevally to 100lbs +, bonefish and sharks, which include the blackfin, dusky shark which I have had to approx 80lbs, on light uptide tackle and the mighty tiger shark which I have seen, but not hooked (thankfully !!)

Accommodation & food is of a good standard & most island hotels offer evening entertainment including tribal dancing & singing etc (usual tourist type entertainment)
