Accommodation for the SAS Guided trip to Botswana

Approx 15 years ago I made an impulsive decision that was going to change my fishing life. I got up one morning and decided that I wanted to visit and fish in Africa, so after a few phone calls and bit of quick research I found myself, less than a week later on a flight to Johannesburg, from where I flew onto Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe and finally ended up at Ichingo Lodge. It immediately became (and still is) my favourite place in the world. To say it enchanted me is a massive understatement. The whole Ichingo experience, from the fishing to the wildlife, the dining and accommodation is simply mind blowing. The first morning there found me standing waist deep in fast flowing rapids casting small rapalas at tigerfish that once hitting the lure proceeded to give me, pound for pound, a fight that only the Malaysian giant snakehead has competed with in terms of freshwater fish. They are an awesome species, like a bar of pure silver with red tinged fins and teeth that make short work of all but the toughest lures and flies.

While this trip cannot be classed in any way a budget trip, you certainly get what you are paying for, in luxury accommodation and dining, the fishing can be superb and in the dry (low water) season you can and do see lion, elephant, giraffe, wildebeast, buffalo etc and some of the best bird watching in Africa is there only a 10 minute boat ride from the lodge, and it is all included in the trip price !!

Impalila is a small island formed millions of years ago at the junction of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers and the Kasai Channel. This is where Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia meet. It is possible to fish four countries in a day or even an hour here !

Fishing areas include rapids, deep, fast and slow rivers and pools and static channels.

Believe me when I tell you that there is nothing like standing waist deep in fast flowing water while casting small rapalas into white water even a salmon would think twice about entering, and the takes are that savage even a 6lb fish will almost tear the rod out of your hand !!
Other species here include 3 spot bream, various other small bream species nembwe and sharp tooth catfish.

I cannot speak highly enough of this lodge, The food, accommodation and staff here are absolutely first class, and the fishing is on a par. Where else in the world can you catch double figure tiger fish while watching antelope, buffalo, wildebeest, elephants and even lions roam the wide open savannah alongside the river.

Trip Facts We fly into Johannesburg, take a transfer to Livingstone in Zambia, where we are met by mini bus and take a road transfer onto the Livinstone ferry, across the mighty Zambezi river to Impalila Island, where we complete immigration. It is then only a 2 minute walk to the Lodge and are met by the owners, Dawn and Ralph. The accommodation is in Meru tents, (double room sized tents with windows, thatched roofs and attached bathroom / shower room.) All tents overlook either the gardens or an off shoot of the Chobe river.
