Fishing for Sailfish on the SAS Guided Trip to Malaysia

Along with Africa’s tigerfish, the giant snakehead is pound for pound the hardest hitting and fighting freshwater fish I have caught. When I first fished for them in a giant reservoir in Malaysia, I was told to use no lighter line than 30lb braid, and considering we were fishing for snakeheads between 5lb and 15lbs, with the outside chance of a rare 20lb fish I said to my guide “you are joking aren’t you ?” as I had thought that 12lb mono would be more than adequate. I soon changed my mind when the first one smashed into my rapala lure and the line immediately parted with a pistol like crack !! "Not surprisingly I immediately changed to 30lb braid like I was told to!" These fish hit lures and baits with incredible ferocity and fight like maniacs, so any weaknesses in your tackle will be exploited.

Snakeheads live a family group, ie on mating they stay together, nurturing and protecting their young, who as fry stay together in a big “ball” called fry balls. The parents constantly swim around them protecting them from other predators. The one thing that makes location easier for us is the fact that snakeheads and their young need to surface regularly to take in air and when they do the first thing you see is a red “ball” dimpling the surface. They also love living in and around snags and the snaggier it is the better it is for them, but not, unfortunately for us !

This is all boat fishing and we use 2no basic methods to catch them, the first being to slowly motor along looking for fry balls, and on seeing one you cast either a lure or a small catfish live bait into or as near as possible to the “ball”. The parents immediately and savagely attack this “intruder” and it’s fish on !! You have to be quick though because they only surface for a few seconds at a time, and some days you just can’t seem to see them at all. The second method is casting blind into and close to snaggy areas. Either way can be very productive on it’s day, as with all fishing it pays to try different things out if your chosen method is not working.

Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
