Fishing for Sailfish on the SAS Guided Trip to Malaysia

I am standing nervously at the back of the boat, some 25 miles out in the South China Sea....all of a sudden my reel starts screaming and line begins to pour off the spool at an alarming rate... I am holding a rod and staring between 2 huge 150 horse power outboard motors at my bright pink balloon, under which is suspended a very lively 4inch long yellow tail live bait, happily bobbing about on the swell some 50metres behind the boat. It is my first day out and I have already seen lots of free swimming and jumping sailfish while waiting to get the baits out, when all of a sudden my reel starts screaming and line begins to pour off the spool at an alarming rate. Wind wind wind ! screams the skipper, just as a 130lb sailfish launches itself from the water and proceeds to tear around the boat and make off to the horizon at what seems like 100 miles an hour !! I start to wind like hell, come immediately into contact with this high speed monster and nearly have the rod torn out of my hands!

This is sailfishing at it’s finest and is an experience that any true angler would give his or her right arm to have.

I have fished in Rompin many times in the last few years for the sails and can honestly say that this destination is a great favourite of mine and so much so that I call it sailfish city ! Yes, it is that prolific for the pacific sailfish. In the right season 20 sails or more can be hooked in single day. I don’t care where you fish in the world, this has to rate as superb fishing in anyones book, and they are not small either. 140lb + fish are regularly caught and the average weight is around 100lbs +. We use live baits under balloons or freelined while drifting, and seeing the ocean full of free jumping and slashing sailfish attacking baitfish shoals in not unusual. In fact it is rare not to see them !

If you have not fished for billfish before you are in for a treat as these fish, when hooked are capable of stripping some 300 metres of line from your reel in 30 seconds, and 100 metres of this will be while they are airborne !!

Other species here include cobia (a ling like fish) which grows to 50+ kilos and fights like a steroid filled tope ! There are also packs of giant trevally present, but these rarely show themselves, so if a chance is there to get one it is a big achievement. Small black marlin to approx 150 kilos are also in the area and one is occasionally landed but they are in low numbers so it is best to not get your hopes up for one of these. Various sharks are also present, including big tiger sharks, but while we have seen them we haven’t yet hooked or landed one, although we do keep trying. Spanish mackerel are plentiful and if you like Sashimi then this is the species for you !

We usually fish 4 to a boat, although we can reduce this to whatever number you want, but this does increase costs somewhat.

Included in the costs of this trip is all transfers, accommodation, meals and soft drinks while in Malaysia, all fishing, tackle etc. The only extras you pay in Malaysia is any alcohol you consume, any shopping you may do and tips for the crew. I have been there numerous times now and have never managed to spend more than £50 on shopping and drinks !
