SAS in Canada: (British Columbia) Target Species The main target species here is the mighty diamond backed / white sturgeon. These fish can grow to incredible sizes, up to 1200lb and some 14ft long ! You can see examples of some of the fish we have taken on previous trips in the Gallery.
On my last trip to fish for the sturgeon and salmon of the Fraser river system my guide, Chris and myself, after launching the boat stood talking, amidst a backdrop of stunning snow capped mountain and river scenery, when he leaned back against his huge 4wd truck, looked at me and said “you know something Steve, God I love my country” I have never heard anyone say anything like that before or since and this remark just about sums up The Fraser river valley, British Columbia and even Canada itself. It is one of the most beautiful countries I have visited and I love the place not only for the fishing and scenery but for the people also. My guides there are now more like friends than guides and I am treated by them as such. When we fish together it is more as mates than clients and this makes the whole experience very special. This is all river fishing, on primarily the Fraser river, but also a few other smaller tributaries of this huge and powerful waterway are also fished. It is all boat based fishing, from small extremely fast aluminium jet boats, usually with 2 anglers per boat + the driver / guide. Bait used include salmon roe (eggs) ditch eels and the god awfull stink bait, which smells so bad it can make a grown man throw up from 30 paces !! (the sturgeon love it though. Apart from the occasional screaming run, most bites start out as very slight rod tip tremblers, and this will be same if the fish weighs 20 or 500lbs ! If you then time it right and hook up the fun then begins and the back will ache as they fight incredibly hard and use the powerful current to their best advantage (22ozs of lead required to hold bottom) and will sometimes give you an awesome aerial display as they launch their huge bodies clear of the water !
While we cannot guarantee everyone 500lb fish, in the right season it can be very prolific fishing and I have personally seen 1 boat land 15 fish in a day.
If you then have enough of heavy tackle fishing why not try a day salmon fishing for the superbly fighting salmon, which these rivers are stuffed full of. Species include pinks, chum, coho, pacific king etc. You can use flies or lures for these “kings of the river” and it is prolific fishing, with the chance of taking many fish in a day.
Trip Facts We fly into Vancouver, take a road transfer to the Fraser river area and stay in comfortable accommodation. (motels or hotels according to your choice and budget). We are then collected and returned each day by the guides, who also provide packed lunches. The usual trip length is 8 days, to include 5 days fishing, but this can be tailored to suit your requirements as some clients like to spend a day or two shopping / sight seeing in the wonderful city of Vancouver and the surrounding areas.
